Course Description

Summary

We spend much of our time in the presence of others, and all of our time in particular spaces. This course will examine several psychological and sociological perspectives on social interaction-- how people think, feel, and act in the presence of others--and how the particular spaces in which interaction occurs affect it. We will focus on the following issues 1. obedience, disobedience, and authority; 2. social perception and cognition; 3. conformity and resistance; 4. social interaction in social dilemmas, as exchange, and as performance 5. “doing nothing.” Students write four papers on selected topic, one that analyzes data they have collected. Students are expected to attend all classes, and to participate regularly in discussion and in occasional course-related research (both in‐and outside of class).
