Beginning, intermediate, or advanced group lessons on the 5-string banjo in the claw-hammer/frailing style. Students will learn to play using simple song sheets with chords, tablature, and standard notation. Using chord theory and scale work, personal music-making skills will be enhanced. History of the African origins of banjo and its introduction to the western world will be discussed as well as past and present practices. Awareness of traditional styles of playing the instrument will be furthered through a listening component and ensemble playing with other instrumentalists.

It is trite but true: kids grow up so fast. In this course we will discuss the incredible growth of infants, toddlers, and children in multiple domains (physical, cognitive, emotional/social). We will discover how growth in each domain affects the others. We will explore enduring topics of discourse in child development, such as nature and nurture, individual differences, and the nature of change.

This lab class is structured for students who have completed CER2208 CUPS: Slip Casting and Mold Making (or equivalent introductory mold making and slip casting courses) to achieve independent production goals to create a series of  ceramic functional ware (cups). The two-hour weekly lab will be guided by the faculty so that students can receive technical guidance and adequate support to establish their studio production practices and expand their knowledge and creative capacities.

Mystics鈥撯揾istorically portrayed as passionate, dangerous, romantic, heretical, satanic鈥撯揳re a thorn in the side of organized religion. From the very beginnings of recorded human time, the presence and practice of mystics has been controversial. Sufi mystic al-Hallaj鈥檚 pronouncement that he was 鈥渢he Truth鈥 was received as blasphemy by the orthodoxy. His execution followed shortly after. Christian mystics of the 4th and 5th centuries were relegated to practicing outside the peripheries of the Roman Empire, in relative secrecy.

Halfway through John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, he admits to the reader in his call to the Muses that he has "fallen on evil days" and into unwelcome solitude, caught "[i]n darkness, with dangers compassed round." Milton wrote Paradise Lost under epically gnarly circumstances -- jailed and fined for backing the failed removal and execution of the King, going blind, having lost his wife and son to illness.

How to Build a Forest

Bennington鈥檚 campus supports beautiful examples of temperate deciduous mixed hardwood forests. This class is a deep dive into forest ecology, land use change, and forest succession at a local scale. Students will explore the local forest community composition, structure, and function over the last 15,000 years and discuss the environmental conditions, disturbance dynamics, and biotic interactions responsible for the forest we have today.

Language Documentation, Revitalization, and Reclamation

This course addresses the theories, methods, ethics, and actual outcomes of language documentation, revitalization, and reclamation work. Students will examine the causes and consequences of language endangerment, strategies for revitalization, and community-led initiatives in reclaiming linguistic and cultural heritage. Case studies from around the world will provide insight into real-world applications of language work and the diversity in form that this work takes depending on context.

Leaves of Grass

This 2-credit course is an introduction to Walt Whitman鈥檚 Leaves of Grass, which inaugurated a distinctly American free verse by breaking with European formal traditions of poetry. We will read the entire original 1855 version (a self-published volume with only twelve poems) as well as selections from some of the subsequent editions that Whitman published over his lifetime (including the 1892 鈥渄eathbed鈥 edition, which contains 383 poems!).

Love in the Time of War

How does love emerge under conditions of war? This seminar explores what it means to sustain intimate relations in the face of overwhelming violence. Through the Anthropology of Kinship, as well as through methods developed across the fields of Queer Studies, Black Studies, and Postcolonial Studies, this course considers how intimacy and love figure in the production and maintenance of racialized, classed, and gendered difference.

This course explores the art and technique of mold making and its supportive processes.Think about all the teeth molds we make when we munch through our evening supper. Our mouths often act as molds to shape the pressures related to communication and speech.  This class will investigate processes related to many different types of molds, from making multiple plaster part molds to flexible silicone examples.

Join a public dialogue about global contemporary art and ideas! Each year the New York nonprofit apexart holds an open call for curatorial proposals. Out of hundreds of submissions from around the world, three are chosen to become apexart exhibitions through an online jury process. Students in this class will be part of the jury. Initial readings and assignments will address the history of New York nonprofit spaces and apexart鈥檚 position within that landscape over three decades.

Performance, Gender, and Sexuality in the Middle East

This course will explore the construction and experience of gender and sexuality in the Middle East through a performative lens. Drawing on research in ethnomusicology, queer and gender studies, anthropology and Middle Eastern history, the course will examine performance (music, dance, theater, poetry and more) as a process of representation, assertion, and sometimes transgression of sexuality and gender identities. This course will delve into the ways that performance, gender, and sexuality relate to ethnicity, nationalism, modernity, colonialism, and religion.

How can anthropology help us listen more critically and carefully? Each class session will consider one ethnographic approach, which students will apply to their listening. Following in the anthropological tradition, where concepts both reveal social processes and are themselves modified by the material at hand, students will consider how podcast episodes they listen to can be elucidated by and also place pressure on each class鈥檚 conceptual approach.

William Wordsworth said that 鈥減oetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.鈥 Emily Dickinson said, 鈥淚f I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.鈥 Allen Ginsberg said: 鈥淗oly! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy!鈥  This is a poetry workshop about subverting expectations, breaking patterns, being drama queens, and generally doing too much. How do we write poems that crack through the haze of decorum? How do we say it like it is, but without being plain or cliche?

Statistics for Social Science

In this course students will learn to use social science statistics to test their own research questions, while becoming more educated consumers of statistical analyses presented in research and news sources. Students will employ various inferential statistics techniques commonly used in social science, such as confidence intervals, t-tests, chi-square testing, correlation, ANOVA, and regression. Students will manage and analyze data using the Stata statistical software package.

The tragic protagonist is a person pushed to the breaking point- dealing with disaster, fate, suffering, unspeakable loss, and often the consequences of their own bad decisions. Greek tragedy shows human beings struggling in a world that often seems brutal, senseless, and beyond their control, where contingency is a hard fact of life. As such, tragedy raises significant philosophical questions: Does human life have purpose? How should we respond to trauma and suffering? How does one live an ethical life in a deeply flawed world?

Designed to help beginner translators with no experience build their own ethical translation practices鈥攚ith attention to issues of race, gender, and queerness鈥攖his course offers an introduction to translation via a hands-on approach. What pronouns do you use when translating from a language that doesn鈥檛 have gendered pronouns? Do you translate slurs? We will tackle these questions, plus the basics, thinking about a work鈥檚 tone, audience, and sociohistorical context in order to bring it to life in English.

Vampire as Cultural Critic

This seminar explores the cinematic vampire as a symbolic curator, critic, and connoisseur, one who collects, consumes, and reflects cultural concerns. Through films paired with philosophical and critical texts, we examine how vampires serve as mirrors, archivists, aesthetes, and subversive observers and how filmmakers stylistically foreground or reframe aspects of the vampire mythos.
