Course Description

Summary

This course will focus on an examination of Hilary Mantel's novel "Wolf Hall" from the vantage point of clothing. The novel details a dynamic period in history when King Henry VIII of England was attempting to annul his first marriage and marry Anne Boleyn. We will have the opportunity to study Tudor costume from both a historic and dramatic vantage point, and examine how this era in history has been portrayed in film and television. Participants will conduct research into fashion from the Tudor period and design costumes for characters from the novel. Corequisite: Dance or drama lab assignment.

Prerequisites

A previous design course in costume or scenery, an advanced literature or history class, or an art history course. Student must read the novel prior to the first class. Drawing skill is helpful.
