DRA4140.01
Course System Home Terms Fall 2014 Intermediate Playwriting: The Scene and Structure

Course Description

Summary

The scene is to the playwright as the chapter is to the novelist; it is the primary building block of the play. Working playwrights craft their plays by putting one scene in front of (or behind, or on top of) another. This course invites intermediate and advanced playwrights to enter their plays through scene work and will challenge writers to write in a number of different styles and genres. Playwrights own creative work will be supplemented and enhanced with readings and discussions of scenes from an assortment of plays in order to explore how scenes function both unto themselves and in the larger structure of plays. Simultaneously, playwrights will be writing their own longer plays.
