Course Description

Summary

In this course, participants will work on developing the skills required to effectively play non-classical piano repertoire and to connect with improvising in a variety of ways. Students will both individually and collectively learn to play bass lines, chord voicings, melodies, basic rhythms, and improvise solos. Greater awareness of possibilities will be developed through listening and studying recordings of a wide variety of masters of jazz piano (such as Fats Waller, Bud Powell, Bill Evans, etc.). Students will be requested to show work during the term at Music Workshop. Students should have basic piano skills and the ability to read music notation. Corequisite: Must participate in Music Workshop (Tuesday, 6:30 - 8:00pm).
