Course Description

Summary

The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) aroused enormous international interest, including in the Americas. Many Latin American authors visited the Peninsula to participate in the conflict, leaving an important body of testimonial and artistic work. In this course we will explore the Spanish civil conflict through a transatlantic approach. The first part of the course will define the historical (Arióstegui, Chiarenza) and theoretical (Gabilondo, Trigo) framework of our analysis. In the second part, we will discuss a series of literary and autobiographical texts by Latin American authors such as O. Paz, C. Vallejo, P. Neruda, N. Guillén, A. Carpentier or González Tuñón. Advanced level. Conducted in Spanish, with very occasional secondary reading in English.
