Course Description
Summary
Demographic and technological changes are challenging institutions, organizations and practices that traditionally have supported artists in their contribution to American culture. What would it mean to radically rethink the future of arts and culture in America? This course will include a review of the traditional models that have supported American artists historically and in-depth research into the brand new models that young artists are envisioning and practicing in contemporary American culture looking to the future. Both visual and performing arts will be included in this examination of how artists in their creation, production, curating and communication are finding new, innovative opportunities to share their work and build the American culture of the future. For students who proceed with an application process, this course will additionally include a Field Work term that will consist of a convening in California sponsored by the Center for Cultural Innovation, a six week course (over FWT) at Arizona State University combining ASU students and Bennington students that will examine new models of cultural vitality in the 21st Century, and end with a convening in New York City sponsored by the American Assembly (a public policy institute affiliated with Columbia University) with contemporary artists, presenters, and funders.
