Course Description

Summary

This course will research, develop and implement public art for two projects: Bennington We will research existing models nationally and internationally that have provided integrations for public spaces. We will explore opportunities on the Bennington campus including, but not limited to, the Commons project. Through dialogue and collaboration, we will assess what spaces are designated for public art, and how decisions will be made about the art that is placed in those spaces.  This research will lead to recommendations about policy concerning public art on the Bennington campus. The second project is a collaboration with Michael Suh, Director of the Beijing Museum of Contemporary Art who has initiated a project called, "Curating in Action".  We will be collaborating with students and faculty in China on a cross-cultural dialogue about public art, its function, its power for communication and diplomacy, and its transformational quality through artistic expression. Registration: Interested students should submit a written proposal of interest to jisherwood@bennington.edu and sgorbati@bennington.edu by May 10. Registration for this course will begin on May 17.
