Resonance -relating to sound, movement, space and time -
Course Description
Summary
A class, a laboratory that explores the relationship between movement and sound, starting with the phenomenology of sound and acoustics, and considering the translation from sound to movement.
Incorporates listening techniques and sensory perception and encourages participants, through improvisation, to draw from movement, sound, space and memory interchangeably. They will be guided through exercises that help make decisions based on assessment, observation, listening and decision making.
This workshop originates from our collaborative practices between dancers, sound artists and scientists, examining concepts that are common for both choreographers and sound artists that can be translated from one to the other.
We will engage with listening exercises, movement interpretation of sound, and the development of scores that can apply to both: sound and movement. We will explore notions such as frequency, tone, timbre, vibration, types of waves, as they are used in science, physics acoustics.
We will also work with sound in space and how it travels via different materials and architecture, using techniques such as panning, fade in, fade out, surround systems. At the end of the course the participants will be able to improvise individually or in ensembles, relate to sound as matter, and to generate movement in relation to sound. Students will acquire knowledge of how sound affects movement and space, and will gain awareness of how to utilize these tools for performances in dance and music.
Learning Outcomes
- -The student will learn to create projects that integrates movement and sound compositional strategies
-Students from dance and music concentrate disciplines will collaborate and create projects across disciplines
-Students from dance and music concentrate disciplines will study the phenomenology and concepts of resonance, in the space, the body and sound
Prerequisites
Students should submit a letter articulating their previous experience with movement or music, and their interest in the course for priority consideration. Priority will be given to students with prior experience in dance and movement-based practices, also for students with prior experience in music-sound based practices.
