Course Description

Summary

This two-credit course is intended as an immersive introduction to the multicultural and polyphonic contemporary poetry landscape, as well as a more general discussion on how to read, discuss, analyze, and write critically about poems. We will read the equivalent of a book a week by an emerging contemporary American poet. Writers to be discussed may include Ken Chen, Natalie Diaz, Tarfia Faizullah, Aracelis Girmay, Cathy Park Hong, Ilya Kaminsky, Hannah Sanghee Park, Morgan Parker, Roger Reeves, Barbara Jane Reyes, Jennifer Tamayo, and Jenny Zhang. Students will engage in video-chats with selected authors, write response papers and a longer critical essay, and will have the option of occasional creative assignments. Corequisite: Required attendance at Poetry at Bennington events (typically at 7pm on occasional Wednesdays).
