Course Description

Summary

This course introduces video as a medium for artistic expression and social inquiry. Students gain an understanding of the video image-making process and develop proficiency with video equipment, including portable and studio production and editing systems. Strategies for the use of video as an art-making tool are explored and works by video artists are viewed and discussed. We will be focusing on video鈥檚 transformative potential offered to artists by the continuously increasing capabilities of various technologies, and its constantly changing role in culture. Students will gain hands-on experience to a broad range of moving image formats and production strategies ranging from HD digital video, analog technology, appropriated materials, green screen and video installation. We will be working both in groups and individually to execute various projects that expose you to the controlled environment of the studio as well as the unpredictability of location-based shoots. This course is suitable both for students who are new to the medium as well as those who may have already taken Introduction to Video but could benefit from increasing their exposure to Video Art, its history, practices and methods.
