Course Description
Summary
Vive « l’Afrance »! This film title (Gomis, 2001) summarizes the goal of this course: an exploration of the rich variety of shared and conflicting francophone identities. Constructed within or outside of France, the identities studied in this course will encompass West African, Maghrebi, Caribbean and French spaces. The discussion of notions such as « créolisation » and « déterritorialisation » will allow students to develop their linguistic, cultural and critical skills. Readings will include Fanon’s Damnés de la terre (1961), Glissant’s Discours antillais (1981), Bernabé, Chamoiseau and Confiant’s Eloge de la créolité (1989), Condé’s En attendant le Bonheur (1997) and Miano’s Saisons de l’ombre (2013). Students will also watch Sembène’s Xala (1975), Deslauriers’s Passage du milieu (1999), Denis’s White Material (2011), Sissako’s Timbuktu (2014), and Chala’s Madame la France, ma mère et moi (2014). Conducted in French. Corequisite: Students are required to attend Language Series.Prerequisites
