Course Description

Summary

This intensive advanced translation workshop focuses on student work. Meant for those who have taken Ethical Translation and learned the nuts of translation there – though students who have otherwise translated may apply for special permission to join, including those taking The Global Enlightenment fall 2024 – here we dig into your longer translation projects. Reading each other’s work with care and attention is required. Revising your own with the same dedication is crucial. You will walk out of this class with a complete translation of a short story or series of poems, or a solid sample of a longer work of fiction (such as a novel).

Prerequisites

Please upload a document to google drive, elaborating on your particular literary interests, listing all previously taken literature courses, and discussing any prior publishing or editorial experience, by November 15, 2024 with a 300-500 word response to the following:
1. What works will you be translating? Cite the author name, title, year of original publication, and original language for each of 2 works.
2. Write a 150-250 word summary of each work, including its literary significance in the original context.
3. Write a brief 200-300 words guessing at what challenges will arise in these particular translations. Commit at least a couple lines to each. Ethical Translation (fall 2023) preferred The Global Enlightenment (fall 2024) with the translation option as final project - with special permission.

Students will be notified of acceptance into this class by November 19, 2024. Note that you must be logged into your Bennington email to access the Google Drive folder.
