Course Description

Summary

Dance, Musicals, Opera - a costume studio practice

The class will consist of three elements-

1) Designing a produced piece in drama or dance

2) A paper project designing costumes for a music based narrative piece (ie:opera, musical theatre, dance)

3) Culminating in mini portfolio of these two projects including archival material, research and renderings.

Each student, working on an individual timeline, will toggle between designing a paper project and a produced project.  This course will offer students an accredited platform for costume design work either in collaboration with produced Dance pieces, produced student or faculty led Drama pieces or self produced plays/films/dance/abstract work. We will also create one paper project in tandem with the realised design in a medium that centers music based storytelling. The last part of the class will work on the process of archiving the work through photography and refined drawings. Students will finish with a mini portfolio of their designs.

Meeting weekly for four hours students will research, design and source/pull/build their produced designs and share in peer feedback. Students will be responsible for fitting their produced garments and collaborating with their directors/choreographers or co designers outside of class and working toward the realized design.

Students who wish to participate in the class should submit a proposal to the instructor articulating:

  1. If they are already attached to a dance or theatre piece and wish to work on it inside of class.
  2. The desire to be considered and assigned to design a Drama or Dance piece in the spring.
  3. What they feel are their strengths as a designer and the areas they wish to gain more understanding or experience.
