Course Description

Summary

This class is fundamentally an advanced rehearsal techniques class for actors and directors with a focus on physical sensory work. The questions investigated include: What is substitution and how can it help bring the relationships of a play to life? How do you create the physical, sensory world of the play? Where are you coming from when you enter a stage from the wings? How do you personalize and endow the set and props your character thinks of as real? In this class, we will work with the basic canon of sensory exercises designed to give the performer these skills of the imagination and body. We will utilize the improvisational techniques Kim Stanley, Stanislavski,Terry Schreiber and others to explore place: how one creates place, and how this allows one to achieve the much sought-after privacy in public that allows for greater freedom of expression. We will also do some reading and research on the science of sense memory. Monologue and scene work will allow us to integrate these new skills and discoveries into work with text. The goal is for students to come out of this class with a fuller understanding of how to embody the character and world written by the playwright.
